How equipment financing works
It starts with a machine you have picked and a written quote. A partner pays the vendor, or reimburses a recent purchase, and you repay over a term. Because the asset itself backs the deal, partners focus on what it is, its expected useful life and its resale value, alongside your business records. Down payments vary by partner and asset.
This is often the most direct route for a single, identifiable purchase. A term loan may suit better when the spending mixes equipment with installation, fit-out and other costs.
Owning, renting or an EFA
| Equipment loan | Lease | Equipment finance agreement (EFA) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who owns it | Your business, from day one | The leasing company until the term ends | You; the partner holds security |
| End of term | Asset is yours, free and clear | Return, renew or buy (per the lease) | Asset is yours once paid |
| Suits | Assets you plan to run for years | Tech that ages quickly | Ownership with lighter documentation |
Each structure can be taxed differently. Ask your accountant before choosing; we do not give tax advice.
Used equipment
Many partners finance used equipment, but older assets can mean shorter terms or a larger down payment, because the resale cushion is thinner. Bring the seller's details, serial numbers, hours or mileage where relevant, and any inspection report. Private-party sales take more paperwork than dealer sales.
Financing the machine or drawing on a line
A line of credit is flexible, but buying a large asset on it uses up the limit you may need for payroll or stock. Equipment financing keeps the asset's cost on its own schedule and leaves the line free. For small tools bought often, a line may still be simpler.
The bill beyond the machine
A quote for the machine is rarely the whole bill. Delivery, rigging, installation, electrical work, software licences and staff training can add a noticeable amount. Some partners include part of these soft costs in the financing; others fund the equipment only. Ask the vendor to itemize them, and ask the partner which items it will cover so you are not caught short at installation.
Section 179 and other tax questions
Owners often ask how equipment purchases are treated for tax. That depends on the structure, the asset and your business, and it changes over time. Limevale does not give tax advice; put the question to your accountant before choosing between a loan, a lease and an EFA.
